The Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area, also known as The Triangle area, is an area with distinct advantages for start ups – not least of which is topping various Best Place to Live surveys year after year. (But don’t take our word for it: check out what Forbes Magazine has to say in a link at the end of this piece).
Established Game Industry
The Triangle is already home to over 30 gaming companies, with over 1,000 people currently employed locally. Companies with local presences such as Epic Games, Atomic Games, Vicious Cycle Software, Electronic Arts, Red Storm Entertainment, Themis Media, and Virtual Heroes provide instant credibility among prospective entrepreneurs, as well as a wealth of resources to support the local gaming community.
Entrepreneurial Infrastructure
The Research Triangle is the hub of entrepreneurial and venture capital activity in the Southeast. The area boasts immense resources to support entrepreneurs including: being home to the Council for Entrepreneurial Development (the nation’s largest entrepreneurial networking organization), a unique availability of technology from other technology companies together with local universities, a pre-existing network of experienced angel and institutional investors, and talented business people that can assist these growing companies.
Educational Powerhouse
Of the ~1.5MM residents in the Triangle, over 54% has a bachelor’s degree or higher. In addition, there are currently over 100,000 students in the area enrolled in over 18 colleges and universities providing a steady pipeline of highly educated workers. NC State University, Wake Technical Community College, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Duke University boast world-class digital entertainment and computer science programs.
