What Joystick Labs is Looking For In Our Applicants

We at Joystick Labs are looking for the same thing most folks interested in interactive media are looking for: a fun new game to play, or a great social app to use with our circle of friends. In that way, we aren’t that different from most people. We enjoy playing and using the latest and greatest games and apps. However, there are some specific things we are looking for in our applicants: a great team of entrepreneurial developers with a vision for an innovative product or potentially disruptive business model and a plan for how to make their vision into a reality -- with our help.

A Great Team of Entrepreneurial Developers

We are looking for developers who are not only creative and capable, but with an entrepreneurial spirit who are willing to make a bet on their vision and ability to execute.  We favor teams that wish to create their own original intellectual property, establish themselves as a company, and chart their own path to success. In short, we seek developers who understand the value of their own work and its place in the larger market.

A Unique Idea

Making a clone of a recently published game doesn’t really interest us. We prefer new franchises over copies and sequels. We’d rather take a risk on something new and exciting than something old and safe.  We’re looking for a next big idea - as big as FourSquare or FarmVille - something that is innovative and potentially disruptive to the marketplace. We understand that the future does not look like the past, and we are willing to support bold new ideas that may seem ahead of their time.

A Good Plan

Having a great team and idea are really important to us, but so is having a thoughtful plan on how your team is going to implement your great idea. We will select teams that know how to make their idea a reality by choosing the right development platform, having the necessary skills to develop their game or app, and exhibiting the discipline to see it through to completion.  We recognize that every great company goes through many iterations of their business model before they find the one that works that is why we are bringing in some of the brightest minds in the industry as mentors to help out teams figure out the best path forward.
