FAQ
Which game startups have you invested in?
This is our inaugural session. That's a fancy word for first. That means we haven't invested in any startups yet, but we hope to invest in yours!
How do we apply to Joystick Labs?
Apply here. Or click the heading above that says "Apply."
Is Joystick Labs only for brand new companies, or can an existing company apply?
Absolutely. We still want to hear from you.
How much do you invest and what does Joystick Labs get in return?
It depends on the team size; $6,000 per founder, or up to $18,000 seed funding per team. We also get a modest equity stake in your company in exchange for funding it, and a share of the money generated by the game or app you work on at Joystick Labs.
What if we need more than $18,000 to make our game?
Then you may be able to use your time and resources at Joystick Labs to make a killer proof-of-concept and use that to attract further investment.
Do we need to write a business plan? Design doc? Submit a demo?
Probably not a business plan; just start with our application form here. If you have a design doc, that's great, but not strictly necessary. A demo, however, is highly encouraged. We're looking for talented folks who can deliver on their vision given some time and resources; a demo shows us these qualities in a very direct way.
Will you fund a company with only one founder?
Only if you are capable of making your game or app by yourself. Teams of 2-5 are strongly encouraged.
Can we participate in the program without moving to Durham, North Carolina?
Sorry, part of being accepted into Joystick Labs is, well, being at Joystick Labs.
Do you have to be a US citizen to apply?
No.
Can you get us visas?
No; you need to take care of that prior to being admitted to the program.
