I am currently working as iPhone and Blackberry developer for 1.5 years and currently learning android programming. Game programming is my passion for becoming mobile developer, and I do have all requirement and plus qualities. However I live in Nepal, Asian country. So, I guess I have no luck :( I would be glad to be that programmer. I am currently working as iPhone and Blackberry developer for 1.5 years and currently learning android programming. Comment on How to Make Money in The App Store with a $0 App by Alan Youngblood http://www.joysticklabs.com/how-to-make-money-in-the-app-store-with-a-0-app#comment-19 Alan Youngblood Wed, 27 Jul 2011 19:25:32 +0000 http://www.joysticklabs.com/?p=1734#comment-19 Freemium is very in vogue right now, with many reasons why. Like anything I would not unilaterally suggest it. However, it can be very profitable for developers if they do it right. I'm currently doing a side project that is a freemium game, but most likely will start only on the web(Since that's the next big platform). There's a few implications of freemium that I think people need to discuss more: ---Ethics of payment. There are freemium games that make tens of thousands of dollars from single customers. That's just silly. You need to find a way to automatically cap that or better, convert it to a paid subscription that costs a lower fixed amount. ---Design F2P from the start. It's very difficult to convert a game to freemium and it must be done in calculated steps like Valve's TF2. It's best to make your game fit the model from the start. ---Not all games fit a freemium business model ---Freemium implies that many people are willing to pay different amounts for the same game (but likely different benefits therein). Game developers/publisher have learned that they can charge different amounts on different platforms, but this teaches us that we can charge different amounts to different people. This has big implications for accessibility or greed, depending on the direction you take it. ---The best pricing model right now is discovering the real value weighted against the real costs and pricing accordingly for optimal (not necessarily maximum) profits. This could be rather difficult to gauge but a good easy way is to get a representative sample of your ideal customers and allow them to freely play the game and ask them (or actually charge them) what price they are willing to pay. ---Freemium is very similar to the shareware model, which has been around a long time and was popular in the early 90s when the economy was down (not like this great recession, but perhaps enough to affect buying habits). ---Freemium proves that in this digital distribution age it is imperative to have a demo freely available and easily downloadable. Too many barriers to entry can scare people off. Think electrical conduction and the path of least resistance. Freemium is very in vogue right now, with many reasons why.
